Les quinze derniers feuillets d’un luxueux manuscrit arthurien contiennent un texte communément appelé « La Penitance Adam », dont on attribue la rédaction à André le Moine. Cette œuvre est un assemblage de la traduction en ancien français de la Vie d’Adam et Ève, de la Légende de la sainte Croix et d’extraits de la Légende de Judas et de l’Évangile de Nicodème.Exploité par les médiévistes dès le milieu du XIXe siècle, ce texte n’a longtemps été connu que par ce seul témoin, exécuté dans l’aire picarde à la fin du XIIIe siècle, le BnF, fr. 95. La récente identification d’un manuscrit anglo-normand légèrement postérieur, le MS. Douce 79 de la Bodleian Library, invitait à reprendre l’édition sur nouveaux frais.Les deux manuscrits ont été copiés pour de prestigieux commanditaires – la haute noblesse de Flandre et l’entourage royal en Angleterre.

The Hexaemeron of Anastasius of Sinai (late 7th-early 8th c.) expounds the creation account and the Adam and Eve story as foreshadowing the mystery of Christ and the Church, an idea that goes back to Origen and beyond. The commentary remained unpublished in Greek until 2007, received only scattered attention, and has been often considered as apocryphal. In this book, the first of its kind in any language, Dimitrios Zaganas firmly establishes its authenticity, investigates its genesis and date, offers detailed analysis of its numerous sources, and studies its distinctly allegorical approach to Genesis 1-3. Several emendations of the Greek text are suggested in the appendix. L' Hexaemeron d'Anastase le Sinaïte (fin VIIe-début VIIIe s.) traite du récit de la création et de l'histoire d'Adam et Ève comme préfigurant le mystère du Christ et de l'Église, une idée qui remonte à Origène et au-delà. Le commentaire est resté inédit en grec jusqu'en 2007, n'a reçu qu'une attention distraite et a été souvent considéré comme apocryphe. Dans cet ouvrage, le premier consacré à l'Hexaemeron, Dimitrios Zaganas établit fermement son authenticité, examine sa genèse et sa datation, propose une analyse détaillée de ses nombreuses sources et étudie son approche clairement allégorique de Genèse 1-3. Dans un appendice sont proposées plusieurs corrections au texte grec.

"This volume offers an instructive comparative perspective on the Judaic, Christian, Greek and Roman myths in relation to each other, as well as a broad overview of their enduring relevance in the modern Western world and its conceptions of gender and identity. Taking the idea that the way in which a society regards humanity, and especially the roots of humanity, is crucial to an understanding of that society. Different models for the creation and nature of mankind, and their changing receptions at different periods and places, can therefore be seen to reflect fundamental continuities, evolutions and developments across cultures and societies: in no context are these more apparent than with regard to gender. Chapters explore the role of gender in Greco-Roman and Judaeo-Christian creation myths and their reception traditions, demonstrating how perceptions of 'male' and 'female' dating back to antiquity have become embedded in and significantly influenced subsequent perceptions of gender roles. Focusing on the figures of Prometheus, Pandora, Adam and Eve and their instantiations in a broad range of narratives and media from antiquity to the present day, they examine how variations on these myths reflect the concerns of the societies producing them and the malleability of the stories as they are recast to fit different contexts and different audiences"
